Swim team dives into State Championships

The weekend of February 4th-6th was a busy one at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.  Swim teams from high schools all over Georgia assembled to compete in the GHSA State Swimming and Diving Championship. Sandy Creek’s swim team took on high schools all over the state, ranging in divisions from 1A-5AAAA.

Coach Abeling explained how the meets work: “Swimmers must meet state qualifying times to be able to compete in the State Swim Meet. Swim events include freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly. There are individual events for each of these plus an individual medley where they swim all four strokes for one event. There are also relay teams of four swimmers for both the freestyle and the medley of strokes.”

While Sandy Creek didn’t take home an overall major title, the boys team left with respected places in their races. Gabe Bartolemei and Tommy Ennis placed within the top 20 in the state for individual freestyle and individual butterfly. The team also had two relay teams eligible for state meet. The first team consisted of Collin Mowery, Vincent Bartolomei, Gabe Bartolomei, and Matthew Ennis, who placed 25th in the state for the Boys 200 Freestyle relay. The second team, Mic Granger, Vincent Bartolomei, Gabe Bartolomei, and Matthew Ennis, placed 18th in the Boys 400 Freestyle relay.

“We are so proud of our boys! Our entire swim team worked so hard this season!” says Coach Abeling. It is clear the entire team has put in lots of work, including 5:30 am practices and crossfit conditioning. Next year the team plans on working even higher to improve their status and hopefully have more students qualify for the state championships. Well done Patriots!
